HUMAN RIGHTS DAY - DECEMBER 10, 2017
Human Rights Day is observed by the international community every year on December 10. It commemorates the day in 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Human rights are the basic freedoms and protections that belong to every single one of us. All human beings are born with equal and inalienable rights and fundamental freedoms. ... Human rights are based on dignity, equality and mutual respect – regardless of your nationality, your religion or your beliefs. They are called human rights because they are universal. It is something to which you are entitled by virtue of being human. Human rights are based on the principle of respect for the individual. Their fundamental assumption is that each person is a moral and rational being who deserves to be treated with dignity.
There are 30 human rights listed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The top 10 are:
- The Right to Equality,
- Freedom from Discrimination,
- The Right to Life, Liberty, and Personal Security,
- Freedom from Slavery,
- Freedom from Torture and Degrading Treatment,
- the Right to Recognition as a Person before the Law,
- the Right to Equality before the Law,
- the Right to Remedy by Competent Tribunal,
- Freedom from Arbitrary Arrest and Exile, and
- the Right to Fair Public Hearing.
Unfortunately, human rights advocates agree that, sixty years after its issue, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is still more a dream than reality. Violations exist in every part of the world.
